Indonesia is archipelago country. In fact it is the largest in the world! Archipelago means chain or cluster of islands. Indonesia stretches 8000 km from the Indian Ocean to the Pacific Ocean between Asia and Australia with more than 17,000 islands in between. There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea).
